Some simple ideas with limited sewing

1) For non-sewers: As a WONDERFUL project for your girl scout troop, class or office, have everyone decorate a 12 x 12 in square. Suggestions range from fabric paint decorations, to iron-ons, sewing buttons on to decorate a square, stenciling, using fabric markers, using non-washable markers, spray painting your hands, your kid's hands, your dog's paws...what ever!! Then you need one person with a sewing machine. Mix the decorated squares with 12 x 12 in fabric squares and sew together. 7 squares down and 5 squares across make a perfect size. Have everyone sign the back in non-washable sharpie and presto! A quilt!!!

2) If you can only sew a straight seam: Cut a long 3in wide strip of any 3 patterns that match (since it is for a kid, this can be LOUD and colorful and will still look great!). Sew all 3 strips together. You now have a long, about 9in wide strip made up of 3 different, complimentary patterns.

Now cut the strip into even squares. Then turn the squares 90 deg and resew together.

It will take 8 squares long and 4 across with a border to make camp sized quilt.

3) if you want to hand sew at a soccer game: (or football or whatever you are sitting at!!) Cut a 10-12 in square. Fold in half. Now fold in half again. Cut 2-3in on the diagonal. Iron (see photo). This will give you an open square inside an outer square. Choose a complimentary pattern. Sew the insert into the 'hole' by hand (see photo). Sew squares together with or without border pieces to make a quilt.
